PROJECT PROFILE

to artefacts within the Museum that could not be moved out prior to the works.

Colchester Castle Museum is a 1950’s steel framed building housed within the walls of Colchester Castle, a scheduled ancient monument as defined in the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979 (as amended) Section.

Scaffold access to the roof was not permitted due to the Castle’s listed status therefore all materials and plant had to be manually carried up the Great Stairs.  Journeys down the stairs for tea and loo breaks were not wasted as all arisings had to be disposed of in the same manner.

Concrete repairs were carried out to the central roof light structure using a polymer modified hand placed repair mortar followed by application of a fairing coat and anti -carbonation coating.

The existing asphalt roof was cleaned and overcoated with the Liquid Plastics Gamma 20 system, which offers a 20-year guarantee.

Repair works to the roof were put out to tender to roofing contractors as the major works related to the application of a Liquid Plastics Ltd liquid membrane system.  In addition the existing concrete structure to the roof lights required concrete repair and application of anticarbonation coatings.

In addition to our concrete repair capabilities the majority of our operatives hold CSCS cards in liquid membrane application and are approved applicators of LPL roof membranes. Structural Renovations were therefore able to provide a cost effective quotation.

The works were required to be carried out in a 4-week period prior to the May Bank holiday weekend whilst the Museum was closed.  Careful forward planning and sequencing of the work together with strict procurement and delivery of plant and materials was vital to meet the very tight programme.

Extensive protection was required both to the listed structure internally and externally but also

The benefits of a liquid applied system over traditional asphalt were clearly demonstrated on this project, not only by access issues but also by the reduction of fire risk and potential weather problems.

Additional works were instructed during the contract as a number of unknowns became evident and revised details were agreed.

Despite the variations the works were completed in time for the Museum to reopen as scheduled.
